This is good enough for Fung, who is excited to learn that Sing will gather a soccer team together from all the other ex-monks–knowledgeable in kung fu but not knowing squat about soccer.
The winning team gets one million dollars and instant fame, which are the other lures beside the revenge factor for Fung.įung meets garbage collector Sing in the crowded streets of downtown Shanghai, where Sing claims knowledge of kung fu could have helped a woman tripping on a banana peel avoid that spill. Fired from his menial job with some harsh reprimands by the mean-spirited smirking Hung, the servile Fung vows to become a soccer coach and enter a team in the tournament where Hung's Team Evil, dressed in black Darth Vader-like uniforms, is favorite to win. This left him as a broken down cripple who lost his self-respect and now acts like a buffoon, working as an orderly for the evil Hung. In the street he meets a former great soccer player Fung (Ng Man Tat), whose career was ruined when egomaniacal soccer superstar and now acclaimed soccer coach Hung (Patrick Tse Yin), garbed with Hollywood sunglasses, a frozen contemptuous smile and lacquered hair, hired a goon to break super star Fung's leg during a key game that was also fixed. Sing still believes in the great kung fu skills he learned as a former Shaolin monk, where he qualifies as a master but the modern world no longer has any use for it. But his confidence is soaring because of his great agility and ability to kick a soccer ball with a supernatural force. Sing (Stephen Chow) is an itinerant can-collector, whose menial work leaves him with torn sneakers and hunger pangs. But its tiresome all too familiar sports inspirational story of the underdogs going up against the heavy favorites in the big game, was a hard chestnut to swallow. I found it silly and sophomoric but slightly entertaining, pleasant in a crowd-pleasing way and packing a lot of enthusiastic energy with its visually pleasing photography and continuous choreographed dazzling special effects and non-stop action sequences.

The film failed to catch on in the States because Miramax held it back for too long and when released didn't know how to promote it. It was shot by director, co-writer, co-producer and star Stephen Chow in Shanghai, where it was ironically banned in mainland China by its Film Bureau for supposedly presenting a disrespectful image of soccer. Now let's see what Miramax cut out-25 minutes? Crap.A cartoonish Hong Kong comedy about the marriage of soccer and kung fu that in no way can be taken seriously. But on fun? That's right, it gets a million billion stars. I'd say this movie deserves 4 1/2 stars out of five based on technical merits, etc. The visuals are fantastic, the characterization competent (even if you probably have seen the archetypes before), and it's a lot of fun, whether it's the parody of a war movie (which my friend called scant instants before it happened) or the somewhat unusual tribute to Bruce Lee (hint: it's all in the sunglasses). Sure, there are a few instances of cheap humor, but you've got to expect this.
This rag-tag band is quite endearing and it works so well.
It's an odd little band, stretching from barely-post adolescent to nearly retirement age. You've got a variety of misfits-the spunky young'n with the steel leg, the obese convenience store clerk who can nearly fly, the plutocratic salary man who uses a style reminiscent of Flying Chimpanzee's Cotton Belly in Wing Chun. Some Shaolin-trained, but for the most part poor and unhappy men get organized in a soccer team with a coach who was crippled in a soccer riot after losing the big game twenty years ago. Shaolin Soccer is a harmless movie, the type that mentions the normal morals you might find in a children's movie (work in teams, don't let success go to your head, cheating is bad, etc.), without preaching them. Throughout the nearly two hour running time of this movie, the room was a glow with merriment, excitement, and remarks of "Holy crap, that is the coolest thing ever!" Indeed, for this movie is filled with amazing visuals, fantastic fun, and all around goodness.
